IRONING ROLLERS
Many aluminium foil plants find that ironing roll systems limit the rolling speeds achieved by their foil mills. This usually results from one or more of the following problems :
- Poor mechanical design
- Poor dynamic performance
- Poor choice of ironing roller covering materials
- Incorrect operating techniques resulting from failure to properly understand the complex technology of the ironing process.
Cedar Technology is able to rapidly and inexpensively evaluate existing designs, and to report on any corrective action that may be required.
Dynamic response can often be significantly improved by just a few minor changes, and perhaps the introduction of covered rolls. Cedar Technology has developed its own unique JX18 covering compound for this application. JX18 has lower bounce characteristics than the other general purpose compounds that are normally used, so providing a better damping effect from the roll, as well as improved control of the foil.
Incorrect operation and setup of ironing rolls is a very common problem resulting from plant technician and mill operators not properly understanding the fundamental principles and physical mechanisms which lay behind the complex ironing process. Cedar Technology can provide informal training in this respect for technicians and mill operators involved in the rolling process. This can often be the most important step in improving ironing roll performance and does not require a large financial investment.
